Walking alongside international student-athletes as they transition to life in the United States, providing a sense of home

HoopsHome: a trustworthy advocate and “soft landing” for international student-athletes. Welcome home.

What is HoopsHome?

HoopsHome is a non-profit that exists to support international basketball athletes as they transition to life in the US. From assisting athletes in understanding American culture and managing day to day life, to weighing AAU options and navigating college recruiting, HoopsHome seeks to be a “soft landing” for these athletes… a trustworthy advocate and a steady presence.

Four teenage boys walking outside on sidewalk near a brick building with a tree overhead. They are dressed in casual and athletic clothing, some wearing backpacks, and one is using a smartphone.

The Beginning

In November 2023, Megan (the founder of HoopsHome) received a message from Xavier, a longtime coach in Africa. One of his athletes had just moved to the United States for high school, and he wanted to be sure the young man had a safe, trustworthy contact here. Xavier connected the athlete with Megan.

Soon, three more international athletes were connected to her—each pursuing education and basketball opportunities in the U.S., and each facing unique challenges with their adjustment here. It didn’t take long for Megan to realize there was a real need among unaccompanied youth athletes who are given the opportunity to come to the U.S. because of their sports ability… and that need is for a trustworthy adult advocate.

Fast forward to today- HoopsHome has served athletes from 11 countries and counting. We invite you to be part of this journey!

Home is not a word I say lightly.

When I first came to America as a student, I had nothing. Finding a home away from home was the most important thing to me — even more important than basketball. From the first day I arrived, there were so many people who went out of their way to make me feel at home. At that moment, I felt like I was not lost in the middle of the forest. I will never forget them.”
